ICAN's Decade of Dogs Celebration

A Decade of Dogs Celebration was a very special night for ICAN, celebrating its ten years of unleashing abilities and changing lives.  More than 700 supporters were in attendance for the sold out event.  It was a night filled with fun, camaraderie, festivities and of course, dogs!

 Patty Spitler, of Pet Pals TV, hosted the event with Sarah Fisher and Tony Stewart (by video) opening the evening with words of inspiration. Keynote speaker, Luis Carlos Montalvan, spoke about his service dog, Tuesday, and the impact she has on his ability to deal with PTSD.  ICAN Board President and client, Mike Grindstaff shared how service dog Barkley daily impacts their family. 

The dinner program ended with special surprises for Sally Irvin.  The first gift to Sally came from the ICAN handlers and was presented by former handlers Jack Oden and Jody Chapman. They surprised Sally with a beautiful quilt made by Handler Krista C., honoring her ten years as Executive Director and Founder of ICAN.  The next gift for Sally came from the ICAN Board of Directors.  Board member Virginia Neff presented Sally with a new addition to ICAN's family– Clare, a sweet Golden Retriever puppy named after Sally's late mother.  

The evening's theme, A Decade of Impact, was beautifully illustrated throughout the ballroom in various segments that highlighted ICAN's work – A Decade of Change, Handlers, Furloughs and Volunteers, Clients, Awareness, Training, Community Support, Staff, Caring for the Dogs and Dogs.  With more than 200 pieces of art work created by offenders, clients and ICAN dogs, the Woof Roof Art Show was a huge success. A special thank you goes to Honorary Chair, Nancy Noel for all of her hard work and dedication to this project. The merchandise table that was filled with textile items made by offenders at the Indiana Women's Prison and the 2013 ICAN Decade of Dogs calendar was quite busy all evening as shoppers quickly bought these one of a kind treasures. Former ICAN handlers also provided dog demonstrations throughout the evening for guests to witness first-hand the talent of our service dogs.

We are thrilled to announce that more than $100,000 was generated from the celebration event! To top things off– an anonymous supporter made a matching pledge of up to $10,000, for every donation received towards the event.

The soup was hot & plentiful on Saturday September 22nd thanks to the hard work of many ICAN volunteers and supporters. This was our third year holding this unique event which keeps growing in popularity. Soup's On attendees were able to sample almost a dozen soups like cheesy chicken tortilla, seafood chowder, chicken noodle, ham & beans, lentil curry, chicken noodle, and vegetable. Diners (over 21) even got to sample Mallow Run wine and Sun King beer.

Our program was emceed by Terri Stacy of WIBC who welcomed everyone to the event and provided remarks about the ICAN program while introducing Dr. Sally Irvin, Executive Director and Founder of ICAN. Sally recognized and thanked volunteer Mary Hardin for her hard work and dedication in creating and organizing the Soup's On event for the past three years. Each year this event has outgrown its space as more and more people come out to support ICAN. This year, University High School was gracious enough to allow ICAN to use its facility to hold the event.

The Naptown Knitters created several scarves, hats, and gloves that were available for sale with all proceeds going to help raise more ICAN dogs. Their handiwork was really quite remarkable (and affordable)! Other items for sale at the event included select photographs of ICAN dogs taken by Liz Kaye, who has volunteered countless hours of her time documenting the amazing work our dogs do, and doggie placemats to help keep sloppy eaters from making a mess all over the floor.

Of course, no ICAN event would be complete without our SERVICE DOGS! Director of Training Jennifer Cattet took to the stage to briefly demonstrate the training philosophy behind the ICAN program with the help of new ICAN service puppy, Jamie. She was then joined by Director of Client Services Anne Ronayne and skilled service dog Pete to demonstrate some of the mobility assist tasks that our service dogs do to help clients live a more independent life.

A 10-year anniversary is a major milestone. This year ICAN is excited to be celebrating ten wonderful years of transforming lives. We just couldn't celebrate properly without the help and support of the entire team at SmallBox and the 24-Hour Web Project. Our organization was this year's lucky winner of a complete site rebuild which also included a sensational video created by Lodge Design that highlights what our dogs can do and what this organization is all about.

The amazing SmallBox team completely transformed our old hard-to-navigate website into a fancy new website complete with a fresh look and user-friendly features. True to their word, the SmallBox team pulled an all-nighter and completed this work in just 24 hours! (We think they were motivated by the two pups Teddy and Olympia that we brought along with us during the task).
