Angel In Disguise

Yeahsen & Harmony
written by Yeahsen's mother Lisa

Yeahsen and Harmony are graduates of ICAN's June, 2014 Graduation

Yeahsen and I were taking Harmony for a walk in our neighborhood and we saw two boys riding those cool bikes and listening to cool music. Yeahsen looks much younger than he truly is, and I guessed that these boys were actually about the same age. They didn't even bother to look up as we walked by. We continued walking around the block and I noticed that they had cut through the street and were rough-housing at the playground next to our house. We had to walk by them in order to get home, but I knew that Yeahsen would not stop at the playground if there were kids playing there. I asked anyway, ''Yeahsen, do you want to play on the playground?'' Much to my surprise he said yes. These boys seemed like the 'cool kids' and in middle school that means everything. So we walked up to the playground, and I reached down to take Harmony off her leash. Immediately, she ran up the slide, over the bridge, to the very top of the playground equipment. Yeahsen just stood smiling, and the boys stopped rough-housing and came over to talk to us. "Wow, that is such a cool dog!'' ''How did you teach your dog to do that?'' Yeahsen actually answered, "That's Harmony". I quickly explained that Harmony is Yeahsen's service dog and we have only had her for a month and that we are still learning all the cool things she could do. The boys stayed with us for a while, engaging Yeahsen! Whoever taught Harmony to play on playground equipment, thank you…Yeahsen is now the boy with the cool dog.

The following is a poem Lisa wrote for Harmony's Handler, Shannon, called "A Hero Raised by an Angel in Disguise.'' Shannon is a handler for ICAN and trained Harmony at the Indiana Women's Prison.
A Hero Raised by an Angel in Disguise
written by Lisa Condes

It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
But, he sits alone, a little boy in the dark.
His mind is something he can't control
He is up all night, he can't settle down to sleep
His mind is like a prison.
It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
She has to get up earlier than everyone else, there's a puppy that needs her.
She does the hard work, she has the patience.
She has the hope that someday, this puppy will be a Hero.
She is our Angel in Disguise
It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
He hears the neighborhood boys playing outside,
He watches them from inside the house, playing ball and riding bikes
He quietly calls, "Hi Friends" a voice that only his mother can hear.
Too scared to approach, too awkward and clumsy to join the game.
But, now, he has a Hero, and he is going to find a way.
His Hero has the strength, she will never leave him, she will never judge him,
She will always be there for him.
Our Angel in Disguise trained a hero for him.
Our Angel in Disguise was there and we needed her, giving her life to help another, always willing, even though she is in a place no one goes.
She had the patience, the hope that someday this puppy would be a Hero.
It's a beautiful day and the sun is shinning
He gets nervous, shakes with fear, a fear that
no one can understand, it's so deep, but his
Hero will find it, she will calm it.
The screaming, the anxiety will be calm with her gentle dog hug.
He will relax, breathe with her and start to see the world around him.
Together, they will take a step, then another and another. With her support, he will come out of the house and join the world.
Over the next few years, the small steps will turn into long walks,
You may not remember her name but remember every time you see this puppy turned Hero, there was an Angel in Disguise.
For I know the plans I have made for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
It's a beautiful day and the sun is shining.
