ICAN, Inc. is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization that relies on the generous support of individuals, business and foundations. ICAN believes that dogs can be catalysts for positive change in people's lives. By building partnerships through the training and placement of assistance dogs, ICAN creates opportunities for at-risk youth, adults and people with disabilities.
Currently pups are trained in 3 Indiana Correctional Facilities (Indianapolis Woman's Prison, Rockville Correctional Facility and Branchville Correctional Facility) where specially selected offender/handlers are responsible for their care and training.
ICAN also provides programming for at-risk youth where troubled youth learn skills in problem solving and making decisions, AS THEY assist with the training of the pups.
ICAN gives priority to placements with children and young adults who have disabilities.
ICAN makes three types of placements.
Assistance or Skilled Companion dogs. Skilled companion dogs are provided to children with mobility or developmental challenges where a non-disabled person, usually a parent, facilitates the work of the dog. This is ICAN's primary focus Assistance dogs perform helpful tasks for adults who use wheelchairs or have other limitations in the arms and/or legs
Facility dogs work with professional caregivers who incorporate the dog into the care of their clients. These dogs are most frequently placed in hospitals (e.g., physical therapy departments) or schools with special needs students.
Therapy dogs work only in the home of the recipient (child or adult) and do not have public access.
